“Who Created God?” is a persistent question that will never stop being asked until Jesus Christ returns. No matter how many times Christians answer this question, atheists will continue to ask it. In this article, you will learn the Biblical way to answer this question.
God is not a created God. The Bible makes this very clear, “All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made (John 1:3).” If all things were made through God, then God cannot be created.
Responses to Atheist Counter Arguments
A lot of atheists will counter by saying, “You have to prove the Bible is true before you can appeal to it.[ref]” The reply is easy. When a Christian is dialoguing with an atheist, the question, “Who created God,” is a question that references the Christian worldview; this means that it has to be understood within the context of the Christian worldview. The Bible is what we have to guide us on how the Christian worldview ought to be articulated. If they wish to criticize Christianity, they need to represent the worldview properly or else they are attacking another worldview that Christians are not obligated to defend.
Some atheists will appeal to Occam’s Razor. Occam’s Razor is a principle that states you should go with the solution with the least amount of assumptions. Using this principle, the atheist will typically argue that the universe doesn’t need a cause for its existence and therefore it is more simple to believe the universe is uncreated.[ref] There are are multitude of problems with this counter argument. First, Occam’s Razor is not considered to be a rule of logic so we are not required to accept it (although many atheists treat it like it’s a rule of logic). Second, the Christian view has the least amount of assumptions when compared with the naturalistic alternative (Yes, that means you can actually turn Occam’s Razor against the atheist). This is because if the universe is eternal and effects have a cause (this is something that the scientific method assumes), it would mean that there are an infinite number of causes; however, with Christianity, God is the one-true cause (Proverbs 16:4).[ref] Third, The notion of an infinite number of causes also leads to logical contradictions. For example, infinity minus any other number would still equal infinity. Mathematically, the notion of a universe that has existed for an infinite amount of time is absurd. In order to defend the notion that the universe is eternal, one would have to argue that the law of contradiction is false. Arguing that the law of contradiction is false would require the use of the law of contradiction. This is because one would be required to make a distinction between a true proposition and a false one in order to argue their point in the first place. Therefore, the proposition “The law of contradiction is false,” is self defeating.
Conclusion
The question, “Who created God?” will never go away, but thankfully, neither will the very good answers that have been given to this question.
This article will be updated over time. If anyone hears an objection to any of the points made in the article, please contact me so that I can update this article with new information. It is my goal to have the answer to every atheist counter argument concerning this issue in this article.
Footnotes:
1. See this article to find out how to respond to this assertion.
2. Some will argue that it is more simple to believe that a natural cause caused the universe to be created, but this only posits a cause other than God, and therefore, does not have less assumptions than Christianity does. Many of the arguments given in this article, such as God being the one-true cause instead of assuming that multiple causes eventually brought out an effect. Christianity involves less assumptions than its naturalistic alternative.
3. Though the Bible attributes a will to men, God ultimately works everything according to his will (Romans 8:28), and therefore, there is no action that is taken apart from His sovereignty.
